Swimming Pool Workouts

When you run or walk for an extended period of time do you get injured? Do you find workouts in a gym boring? Then try working out in a swimming pool. We’re not talking swimming; we’re talking about deep water running or walking in a pool or doing exercises, sometimes with a group.

Running or walking in the deep end of a pool can have some of the same benefits as walking or running on land but with less impact on your joints. The resistance of the water gives you a great workout.

Many can simulate running or walking in the deep end of a pool without any equipment, but if you can’t, or do not feel comfortable, you can purchase a light vest and booties that will keep you upright and in the correct running and walking position. You can usually find this equipment in running magazines or online.

And check out your local recreation center, health club, or senior center and see if they offer pool exercise classes. Together with a group--and along with an instructor--doing exercises in the pool can be fun.

So, use the pool this summer for swimming, stationary exercises, running and walking, and you’ll get an all around workout.
