Seniors can run too!

This upcoming Memorial Day weekend usually kicks off the summer running season for many seniors; but if you haven't been running regularly here are some tips.

Consult your doctor. Make sure you do not have a medical condition that will prevent you from running.

Buy good running shoes that fit you properly. This may help prevent injuries.

Don't start out with high mileage workouts. It is best to start at a very comfortable pace for a short distance than to start out too fast for too long of a distance. To judge what's a comfortable pace you should be able to carry on a conversation as you run. If you have to walk, then go ahead and walk. After a few weeks you should start to see improvement in your running, but don't increase your mileage too rapidly or this could result in injury.

Always run against traffic, wear brightly colored clothes, including a reflective vest and head lamp if running early morning or at night in the dark.

Join a running club so that you can run with others. There is bound to be a running club near you.

It will takes many months, sometimes years, to become a marathoner but getting out and running--no matter what the distance--is great exercise.
