It's a whole new world!

Just when you think you have begun to understand Facebook and MySpace, and Google and Yahoo, along comes names like Twitter and Twellow, Digg and Delicious that give seniors even more social networking and news gathering options.

As more and more seniors discover the web they find many options to gather information and in the desired format they select.

For example, Google and Yahoo can search a specific topic of interest in the news or on blogs and have the results sent directly to your email account. Each day your inbox will be filled with updated information about news pertaining to the specific topic you selected.

Although Facebook is probably the most familiar social network to seniors, Twitter may also be of interest because it limits comments to 140 characters and gives you the option of following the comments of those you have selected, or having others that you have selected follow your comments.

When you participate in a social network, or comment (post) on a blog be careful what type of information you give out. Remember, much of the information you put out there can be made available to just about anybody to see. Use this simple rule: only put information on a web site that you would feel comfortable reading about yourself in the local newspaper.

Seniors will find that if they take some time and learn about the options that are available online it will open up a whole new world. Take a class or just visit with your grandson or granddaughter, or a college student, and they can show you the various opportunities that fit your specific need. Most colleges nowadays will teach their students about the capabilities of the web.

So learn the resources that are available to you and enjoy!
