You can bike throughout Quebec along 2,532 miles of bike paths and designated roads on Route Verte.
Last summer I biked in and around Quebec City, then around a portion of Lake Saint Jean, and then segments of a route along the St. Lawrence River from Riviere-du-loup, back to Quebec City following Route Verte signs. It was truly an international experience and along the way I discovered great hotels, restaurants, and met warm and helpful people.
This year I used Route Verte to return from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, about 20 minutes driving time south of Montreal, to the United States border at Rouses Point, New York. After biking into Canada from Vermont I spent the night at the Auberge Harris in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, a hotel which caters to bicyclists, before heading south the next day. Bicycling through mostly farmland on lightly traveled country roads was both beautiful and relaxing.
A few things to remember: you will need a passport to travel into Canada; in Quebec the official language is French; call your credit card company to inform them you will be traveling to a foreign country; and convert some U.S. dollars into Canadian dollars before you leave.
A very good guide book is: Cycling in Quebec: Official Guide to Exploring the 4076-km Route verte published by Velo Quebec Association. |
